So some of you may have heard about the incident that took place during the handshaking after the Michigan IU classic on Sunday. If you didn't hear about it, IU's coach Tom Crean had a few heated words with one of the assistant coaches of Michigan. What a lot of people didn't realize at that time, the assistant was a former IU assistant coach... one of the ones involved in driving the IU program into the ground under Kelvin Sampson. Now, some people were ripping Crean for starting things after the game, but Tom Crean doesn't like that coach... and you know what... I'm ok with that. Sampson and his assistants ran one of the great programs into almost non-existence. Crean inherited one of the biggest messes any one coach could walk into, and he brought Indiana back. It took a few years, but IU is back and it owes no thanks to anyone from the Sampson era. So if Crean doesn't like him good! That dislike makes him work just a little bit harder, want it just a little bit more. That's why we love sports rivalries.
One of the greatest parts of being a sports fan are the rivalries that consist of true hatred of the other side. The one's where the guys just don't like the other guys. Every Yankees Red Sox game is nationally televised for this exact reason. Same story with Duke UNC and IU Purdue basketball games. It doesn't matter if one of the teams is terrible and the other the best in the country/league. You know why? Because guys play a little harder, want it just a little bit more when you are playing those dreaded rivals. The games are always just a little bit better, just a little bit more exciting. And maybe this is just the baseball fan in me, but I think a little bit of a scuffle is good for the game every once in a while. Now I'm not promoting bad sportsmanship or anything like that, but I'm also not for pretending 2 teams like each other. At every home football and basketball game, the Purdue student section does an "IU Sucks" chant. Regardless of who they are playing, or what the score is in the game... they do that chant. I'll be the first to admit, I can't stand the Reds (sorry readers, but I can't) and I know plenty of Reds fans that share that sentiment towards the Cardinals. Molina will never enter Great American Ballpark without getting boo'd and the same goes for Brandon Phillips and Jonny Cueto in Busch. It's the reason Reds fans were up in arms when Cueto didn't make the All-Star game with La Russa managing the game. Fans get more into rivalries, they make the sports world go round.
