Well, technically Commerce City but close enough. It was announced earlier this week that the March 22 match between Costa Rica and the United States will be played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park home of the Colorado Rapids. So what’s at stake? A spot in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. What is the Hex? The Hex (formally known as the Hexagonal) is the fourth and final round of CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) world cup qualifying. This round is between the top six (hence hex) teams from the group stages in the third round. Each team plays the others twice in home and home series with the top three teams advancing to the World Cup. The fourth placed team will play a one game playoff between the winner of the Oceania Conference (likely New Zealand).
Now before you ask, YES, I’ll be going (so long as tickets aren’t ridiculously expensive). I’m incredibly excited for the Mile High City to be hosting an international qualifying match. I’ve been saying for a while now, that we need to start training and playing games here at mile up to possibly give us an advantage over opponents or to condition us for play down at Azteca in Mexico City (7,349 ft above sea level). Well, at least be better prepared to play matches below 8200 ft (FIFA banned international matches above that altitude). It could especially help us when playing against some of these Caribbean teams that play at around sea level Anyway, I can’t wait to see Dick’s Sporting Goods Park decked out in red, white, and blue cheering on the home team.
Alright that’s enough of me for this weekend. I hope you all have a great weekend full of fun and relaxation. Also, be sure to tweet @thosesportsguys or right on our Facebook wall with your suggestions for the Big Ten division names. All three of us will be weighing in on this topic next week so we look forward to hearing from you all. Catch you all next week!
