Sure Alex Presley and Matt Hague may not be putting up the numbers you remember in 2011 but they have spent much of the year up in the majors. Whenever we do have the pleasure of watching them play they always put on a show, making a get defensive play or making a clutch hit, it is always exciting. The pitching staff has been strong with league leading, in this case top 10, ERA’s by Jeff Locke and Rudy Owens. Justin Wilson has also been an ace throwing 121 strikeouts, second best in the International league.
It should also be noted that the Pittsburg Pirates are poised to make the playoffs this year, most likely as a wild card, for the first time in 19 years. The Pirates were even active during the trade deadline acquiring Gaby Sanchez from the Miami Marlins. All of this information is great but it what does it mean for the Indianapolis Indians? I think the best way to illustrate would be to use the old childhood favorite books Goosebumps…it all depends which path (chapter) you decide to go down. So you choose – path 1 or path 2? The fate of the Indians are in your hands…choose wisely (it shouldn’t be too difficult).
Path 1: Walk the Plank
If the Pirates follow the compass the have used over the past 20 years then when we return to baseball next year you will see all new faces in the Indians organization. Most likely guys who were playing double A ball last year, or older players (relatively speaking) just filling a position. The Indians will slide back into being a fun, .500 triple A baseball team and the Pirates ship will sink to the bottom of the NL Central once again!
Path 2: Seize the booty!
If the Pirates have wised up and this relatively new Captain Frank Coonley and first mate Neal Huntington have a better compass you will see many of the same players throughout the organization. The winds are pointing in a direction that indicates this Captain and his first mate know what they are doing and have steered this ship in the right direction. Since taking over in 2007 these two have started to build a strong farm system that we now see is producing some treasure. They have also signed some key players such as Andrew McCutchen and even acquired pitcher A.J. Burnett. The Indians will be strong for years to come and the Pirates may have a chance to seize the booty!
