For starters, let’s be honest. This has been a season of madness. We’ve had more #1 teams than I can remember. We had an entire month and then some of a new #1 each week. It’s been ridiculous. But it has also been a lot of fun (unless your team was the #1 going down). As expected, the conference tournaments have been equally as exciting. Let’s take a look at a few, power conferences and mid-majors alike.
Staring in the mids, the WAC tournament is wide open. The second round yesterday saw, both the #2 Denver Pioneers fall (#DOOM #PANIC) as well as the #1 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. These were the two teams that split the regular season title. The Pioneers four point loss to Texas State was so bad (KenPom gave them a 93.3% change of winning) that they might not even make the NIT. The new favorites are the #3 New Mexico State Aggies mainly because they have a 7’5” freshman. He doesn’t have to jump…it’s ridiculous. Elsewhere in the mids, a 15-20 Liberty team won the Big South. Valparaiso edged a few teams to finally capture the Horizon league crown. Gonzaga put away the WCC with hopes of capturing a #1 seed in the tournament. Speaking of the Zags, I’m still not convinced they are a #1 seed. Who have they beat? Alright, they beat a good K-State team and narrowly edged a good OK-State team. They were edged at the buzzer by Butler when they had it won (TURNOVERS!) and lost to then #13 Illinois. Also, there conference isn’t that strong let’s be real. OK, St. Mary’s is good, but five of the 9 teams in the WCC have losing records. I guess that’s the difference between the power conferences and the mid-majors. Speaking of differences between mids and power conferences, I saw a visiting player air ball a free throw at a DU game the other week (and almost the second one). Talk about rough. Oh right proctoring…and look up…and back to writing (what they don’t know is that I’m really good at typing without looking down at my laptop).
So far, the first round went as expected…well except for Purdue losing to Nebraska (seriously Boilermakers?). Illinois edged Minnesota at the buzzer and well look dangerous. In my opinion, from here on out in the B1G tournament it’s anybody’s crown. If Indiana is going to beat Illinois and look to lock up a #1 seed in the big dance then they must put the Illini away early. Every game from here on out is a big game so you have to bring your A+ game. By the time I get this up the game could be over so let’s hope they jump out early and not let up like they did in Champaign.
Alright, the exam is about over so I’ll wrap this up. The college basketball season has been crazy this year, all year. That’s what I love about college basketball. It’s high energy, the players are passionate and always play hard, and the madness and upsets. The madness that is a season of college basketball is what makes it exciting. At this point I’m not even sure it is madness anymore, it’s just college hoops. Have a great weekend everyone and get ready to fill out your brackets!
