That game last Monday was over by halftime. For all intents and purposes the game was a bust for Notre Dame. I don’t even think the spirit of Rudy could have salvaged that game. It appeared the Irish had left most of their moxie in South Bend. The talked-about defense missed tackles left and right including many of those from their leader Te’o. What could have been stops for losses turned into big plays and points. I’m not sure if Alabama executed their game plan but given that it was 28-0 at half and ended 42-14 I’d assume that they did. Not a bad couple of years for the Tide. Second consecutive championship win, third in four years…they’re doing something right in Tuscaloosa. The game was over so early that the biggest headline to come from the game was Brent Musburger’s drooling over former Miss Alabama and girlfriend of Alabama’s QB A.J. McCarron. It was enough to make ESPN issue an apology…geez Brent.
While it wasn’t the outcome the Irish or their fans were hoping for, I’m not too surprised. Having seen Alabama exchange haymakers with Georgia in the SEC championship game, I knew Notre Dame was going to have to play their best game of the year. They didn’t. Honestly, they kind of showed that they were overrated and didn’t belong in the number one spot. A buddy of mine lamented that we could have watched a better game if we had the playoff already. He’s probably right. Notre Dame probably would have been knocked out in the first round of the four team playoff. Maybe it’s time Notre Dame starts playing harder teams. Sure they played Stanford, USC, Oklahoma, and a good BYU team but they’re no powerhouse SEC team or Oregon for that matter. I’m curious to see how the Irish respond next year but I hope for entertainment sake, they aren’t as overrated. Alas, they probably will be.
Alright I’ve probably done enough home state bashing for now so I hope everyone has a great weekend and a good next week. Tune in next week for more posts by all of us here at Those Sports Guys. To close how on a more humorous note here is a quote from Lauren Calkins on peewee hockey:
“Little kids don’t believe in passing, they believe in glory”
