Racism is unfortunately still an issue we deal with today. Racism has hit US national media twice in one short week, and while we can say these are 2 extremes that don't represent the majority of america, which very well could be the truth, but regardless, the fact we are still talking about this as an issue is a troubling, troubling problem. Sports has always been a sort of trailblazer in terms of dealing with issues of social and civil rights. From Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball to the recent LGBTQ athletes breaking that barrier in various sports more recently. Because of these trailblazers, we should have hoped that sports were still, and would continue to be a unifying force on this issue, but the sad reality not everyone is on board.
This is not solely an american issue. Quite the opposite actually. All around the world, teams battle issues of race, particularly with fans of soccer. Just over the weekend on the other side of the world, Barcelona star Alvez had a banana thrown at him while trying to take a corner kick. How can people think that this is okay? How can we tolerate this as fellow fans. FIFA has been going to great lenghts to try to combat racism in the sport and it cannot seem to make any headway. This is a sad reality.
I am not a minority, I know I cannot speak to racism in respect to how it has affected my life, but these issues in sports take away from the beauty and unity that sports can bring. Sports for me have always been a place that were always a more level playing field. If you were willing to come out and give it your all it didnt matter who you are or what you were, there was always a place for you. There are countless stories of athletes standing up for each other at all levels. Now is the time we as fans need to stand up and defend the athletes we cheer for and respect. We need to raise the standards of ourselves and other fans and demand more from one another. We need to take strides to eliminate these issues from sports. Let sports be a shining light again that leads change in other parts of the world. Be the change yourself.
