First off, I want to say I appreciated the fact that London didn't try to go bigger and better than Beijing. Though parts of the ceremonies were a little weird, but I gotta say I love the incorporation of music (ok, so they may have just won me over with multiple Beatles performances and a song by the Monty Python folks) and culture... its was definitely a England show (though the mascots were an epic fail).
But moving on to the real happenings of the Olympics, the people of England and the world got to see the stars and stripes flying early and often over the podium. The USA came saw and conquered at the Olympics once again. We won 104, yes triple digits, medals (46 of those being gold, also the highest)... that's 16 more than China and 22 more than Russia (the only nations who really threatened to take the top spot from the USA). From the huge favorites like women's soccer and both the men's and women's basketball teams, to the surprise champions like Purdue's own David Boudia and everywhere in between the USA found its way to the medal stand in 20 different sports. Obviously we owned in the pool with names like Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, and newcomer Missy Franklin, the U.S. was set there. The Women's Gymnasts impressed everyone and not only brought home the Gold as a team, but Gabby Douglas took the gold in the All Around. We had a track runner who had been shot in the legs find his way to the medal stand as well. The USA had so many great stories, I could go on all day, but I'm going to move onto some other exciting moments.
Well its late, and this blog is already a little long so I will wrap things up. The 2012 Olympics united the world again, gave us reason to hope, gave us reason to cheer, made us laugh and there were some tears shed as well. We got to see acts of courage and moments that we will never forget. For a fortnight in London was the center of the sports world and I have to say I am going to miss the sights and sounds and thrills that came from it. Have a great week and remember ...
