Let's just say that it is nice to hear someone from that organization finally say we are young but we are ready to play some basketball AND WIN. As many of you know I have been a supporter of Larry Bird and most of his choices while trying to rebuild this team. I agree with my colleague on the fact that Bird is still in purist to find the next "Larry Bird" but overall he has done a good job. He got rid of the bar fighting, girl harassing, fan punching players and went for young talent that just needed to be developed. He stuck his neck out for his head coach until he came to a realization-Jim O'Brien wasn't on board. Sure Jim O'Brien was willing to coach a team that was in its rebuilding stage but he never realized that the Pacers are beyond that stage. He failed to trust his players and make them believe they could win. That is what Vogel is doing with this young team, he is making them believe they can win-and it is working.
The Indiana Pacers are 5-1 since Vogel took over and the one lost came to the LeBron and his 41 point comeback; a game the Pacers could have won. I am not saying that the Pacers are heading to the championship game, I am not saying they are going to break .500 this year and I am not saying they are even going to make the playoffs. All I am saying that it is nice to hear the organization talking about the playoffs and not "rebuilding." After the past three seasons and the fallout this season under Jim O'Brien, I am just excited to see the team put together a string of wins.
I am not ready to jump on the Vogel bandwagon yet-I was too recently burnt after trusting Jim O'Brien earlier this year. I will say that I continue to believe in the young team Bird has put together and I have high exceptions of Vogel. Young players like Roy Hibbert, Darren Collison, Tyler Hansbourgh, Paul George, and yes our rookie head coach Vogel have shown they have what it takes over the past six games. Go Pacers!
